We support OneWorld to Empower Service Providers Against Gender Based Violence in Benin

OneWorld is an International NGO, with a mission to innovate internet and mobile phone applications that the world’s poorest people can use to improve their life chances, and help people everywhere understand and act on global problems. Oneworld UK was contracted by UNFPA to explore strategies to tackle Gender Based Violence (GBV) in the Benin Republic, leveraging mobile technologies.

Although Benin has a strong legal framework related to Gender-Based Violence (GBV), with eight laws in place regarding Violence Against Women & Girls (VAWG), a number of factors forestall its impact on the general population. For example, there is a general lack of awareness and understanding of the law.

OneWorld wanted to test the idea of creating a feature phone friendly digital platform bringing together all the information and resources relating to prevention and response to GBV, and place it in the hand of social service workers and end users.

OneWorld licensed Every1Mobile’s Website Builder, and used it to build a sophisticated French language prototype which, among other things, includes a library of educational short messages to be shared via SMS or instant messaging applications as well as a community features with the ability to create an account, send in feedback, share inspiring stories, and sign up for free updates.

OneWorld found the Website Builder to be very helpful for quick and cost-effective deployment of a well-designed site that can work on a range of devices.

The prototype was tested in a variety of contexts and with a range of stakeholders (women, men, and youth) using a 2G and/or a3G connection on feature phones and smartphones.

While discussing the project with central level stakeholders, OneWorld also realised that in addition, they would be able to use the mobile site as a central repository for interventions and resources which they currently lacked.  Further, the OneWorld team was very encouraged by the availability of accessing information via audio.

Said Isabelle Amazon-Brown, who led the build and test of the prototype on behalf of OneWorld: “it’s so brilliant to be able to go from having nothing to having a sophisticated prototype to test, and to be able to do that quite quickly”.

Every1Mobile is proud to have supported OneWorld’s effort to bring positive changes to Beninese society.
